FIRE FROM A CAN OF COKE AND A CHOCOLATE BAR

This idea was originally proposed by Andre Bourbeau to Rob Bicevskis about 6 years ago. I don't know if he is the one that came up with it in the first place. But thank you to Rob for bringing this method to my attention. The original concept was to investigate unique and unusual ways of making fire using everyday objects that one might be carrying around, should one be unexpectedly stranded in the wilderness. Of course, prudent hikers will probably be carrying a lighter or matches! :),

PACK RIGHT, PACK LIGHT

While on a backpacking trip, have you ever experienced walking up a steep trail carrying what seemed like your grandmother’s oven – a bulky, heavy backpack – that caused you to pop in several analgesics due to severe back strain?  In that case, let me share some tips on packing backpacks since I’ve experienced this myself - carrying heavy loads while thinking that all the things I’m carrying were necessary. So, here are some tips on turning your rock-heavy loads into a load as light as your girlfriend’s shoulder bag (or kikay kit for that matter.)

PEPSI CAN STOVE

The Pepsi Can stove is composed of four parts: three pieces made from soda cans and some foil tape. Two soda can bottoms are the exterior pieces. The upper can is turned upside down and fits over the lower can. The center "bowl" of the upper can is cut out making a large hole for easy fuel filling and lighting. Small burner holes are made around the perimeter of the top section.

MOSQUITO REPELLER
Here's a good tip for keeping mosquitoes away from your camp site. Take some glass bottles. Fill them with kerosene or lamp oil. Roll a rag for a wick leaving the wick out of the lip of the bottle about 1/2 inch and light. Set 3 or 4 around your camp site. Works great!

CAUTION! As with any improvised torch or candle be careful you don't start a fire.

EMERGENCY HEATER/STOVE
Here's an oldie but a very useful tip. Take a roll of toilet paper and soak it in a combustable liquid (lamp oil, kerosene, or charcoal lighter fluid) then store the roll in a metal tobacco tin. When needed remove the lid and light the top.. it will burn for hours and provide a great source for heat or cooking and even a light source.

CAUTION! Do not use in confined spaces like inside a tent because of potential fumes.
